Passing of Tia Paasi
- Wellington Rugby Mourns the loss of Wellington Pride stalwart Tia Paasi
Wellington Rugby has mourned the loss of former Wellington Pride and Black Ferns player, Ponisitia Paasi (known as Tia). Tia sadly passed away on Saturday 3rd March 2018, from illness, aged 48.
An uncompromising loosehead prop, Paasi represented the Wellington Pride in over 50 appearances spanning 10 seasons in the Wellington jersey. Paasi made her debut for the Black Ferns (player number 102) in 2001 against England in Rotorua and again wore the silver fern in 2007, for a total of four tests for her country.
Paasi was a permanent fixture on the Women’s club rugby scene in Wellington for an astonishing 21 seasons. She was a stalwart of the Johnsonville Club for over 10 seasons, but also had stints with Poneke, Petone, Wainuiomata and Marist St Pats in a decorated club career.
Spotswood Rugby Trip
A wider Premier, Reserves and Colts group travelled to New Plymouth for a pre-season fixture against Spotswood Rugby Club (known as the ‘Spotty Dogs’) last weekend.
The day went great on the whole and thanks to the Spotswood Committee and also Dane Robertson and a few of our guys meant it ran really smoothly. The feeling amongst the guys was really positive and that translated on the park with a solid result against Spotswood who boast a few Taranaki reps. We ran out winners 33-21 over 5 20 minute periods.
There was an after match at the Clubrooms post the match which had both Clubs get together and share some food and a brew. It was a very beneficial for the guys and acted as a quality team building exercise leading into the season proper. We will be looking to host Spotswood down our way around the same time next year!
Some of the photos of the day are as follows:
On 9 February, we entered a team into the Centurion’s RFC Charity Golf Challenge at Shandon. It was a great day with 21 teams entered and an Ambrose format was played. We had Blair Hannah and Jason Anquetil from the Committee and representatives from Young Motors and All Square Construction Limited (two local sponsors) and although we didn’t feature in the overall event which was won with a nett score of 51, we were fortunate enough to win the Club Cup which is contested by Rugby Club’s that entered a team. Although there were only 5 teams competing in this out of the 21, our nett score of 58 won it.We won a Cup (which needs to be engraved before next year’s defence), photo, a signed ball and jersey by the winning Lions Championship side from last year (see attached). These will sit nicely somewhere in the Club for the upcoming season. The Centurions support the Rugby Foundation, an independent Charitable Trust that looks after areas of concern and need within our national sport and whose main objectives are to foster rugby at grass roots level, injury prevention, welfare and the on-going care of critically injured players. This is a great cause to be getting behind.A good day had by all and a good result for the Club
