For 18, Against 139

It might have been April 1st, but it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke — it was the net result of our two prem teams’ efforts against OBU last Saturday.

The Quay Marine prem reserves went down 75-7 while the Woodridge Homes prems did little better, going down 64-11.

For the large turnout of J’ville supporters at Nairnville Park there were terrible flashbacks to last season!

After looking so promising during the first two weeks of competition, it was disappointing to see the backward steps taken on Saturday. The reserves set the ball rolling with shoddy tackling, poor handling and easy turnovers and the prems seemed to have caught the bug not long after.

There were a few bright spots. Eamon Carr impressed in the reserves’ pack as did try-scorer Dylan Selkirk while Tawera Rameka-Styles and Levi Grace both made some searching runs through midfield.

Kane Thompson was the prems’ standout but he was of no use to anyone while in the sinbin either side of halftime and neither was a team-mate not long after.

Left wing Romu Senileba scored a try in somewhat strange circumstances early on. He tackled an opposition player but somehow was left with the ball in the arms — and with no rivals between him and the tryline.

The prems were offside from match kickoff and that set the tone for the rest of the match. They led briefly after Senileba’s try but it was mostly downhill  from there.

Mind you, this Old Boys-University side are a very slick and pacy outfit across the park. It was their third win from as many games in the Swindale Shield competition and it’s obviously going to take a special effort to upend them.

OBU scooted out to a 31-11 halftime lead then ran in five more tries in the second half.

And things don’t get any easier for J’ville with Norths (away) this Saturday followed by MSP (away) next week.

There did look to be plenty of promise among our colts who  stepped out on Saturday (albeit with minimum numbers) for the first time and went down narrowly to Hutt Old Boys Marist 19-14. They take on Wainui, away, on Saturday.

Our other teams finally get serious this weekend, though unfortunately we do not have a women’s team this year.
